Hanging baskets around the house perimeter host nettles — the essential caterpillar food plant for Yellow and Red Admiral butterflies. Raising the plants protects them and creates small satellite habitats that carry the sanctuary right up to the walls of the home, extending the butterfly habitat beyond the garden beds. Different basket styles double as a simple way to identify each species from below. Our host plants and seed follow guidance from the Moths and Butterflies Trust of New Zealand.
